Dr. Aznan Hasan is an Assistant Professor in Islamic law and the former head of Islamic law Department, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, International Islamic University Malaysia. He taught subjects such as Islamic Legal Theory, Islamic Commercial Law and Islamic Banking and Finance at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has served as a Shariah advisor to various financial Institutions, legal firms and corporate bodies, at both local and international arenas. He was a member of Shariah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia. He resigned in August 2008 to become the Chairman, Shariah Committee, ACR Retakaful Bahrain and ACR Retakaful Malaysia. He is also a licensed Shariah Advisor for the issuance of Islamic securities and Islamic Unit Trust Schemes, Securities Commission of Malaysia. He is a Shariah Advisor for Bursa Malaysia, the sole Malaysian Exchange and Dat al-Istithmar, London. He is also Shariah Consultant, Asembankers Malaysia Berhad and an external Shariah Fellow at Islamic Banking and Finance Institute of Malaysia (IBFIM). He is also a Bursa Malaysia’s FBM Index Advisory Committee Member. Dr. Aznan Hasan received his first Degree in Shariah from University of al-Azhar. He then successfully completed his Master degree in Shariah from Cairo University with distinction (mumtaz). He then obtained his Ph. D from University of Wales, Lampeter, United Kingdom.

Hani Baothman is a British Chevening Scholarship holder from his MBA studies at the Imperial College, London, UK. Hani has over eleven years of intensive experience in prominent national and multi-national public and private sector institutions and companies. His previous experience has been with Al-Khabeer Financial Consultants, the Islamic Development Bank (IDB); Saudi Econmic & Development, a prominent and proactive investment group; and ABV Rock Group, the Saudi Scandinavian JV contracting company.

Among his major achievement over the past six years at IDB were:

  • Managing a portfolio of business divisions (SAR 400m, annual turnover) and assisting with planning the financial needs, analysis of market trends and enhancement of business models.
  • Syndication of trade and investment transactions, such as a USD 80m, syndicated trade financing for the purchase of fertilizers & a USD 30m, syndicated lease financing of medical equipment.
  • Managing the appraisal of investment proposals in the MENA region.
  • Negotiating with lawyers, investment bankers and other relevant individuals and organizations in merger, acquisition and disposal situations.
  • Organizing, supervising and analyzing preliminary and final due diligence efforts; leading negotiations during the closing phase of acquisitions including financial valuations.

As a CEO, Hani is responsible for implementing the strategic direction of A’ayan as decided by the board of directors. He is in charge of implementing corporate policies and set the procedures needed to enforce the policies. He also assists and advises the board on matters regarding strategic planning and development.

Dr. Hussain Hamed Hassan does not need any introduction in the field of Islamic finance. He did his PhD in the Faculty of Sharia from Al Azhar University, Egypt, and Master of Comparative Jurisprudence from University of New York, USA. He graduated in Law and Economics from University of Cairo, Egypt. In his professional career, spanning over half a century, he has been a prominent scholar and teacher of universal dimensions, having established Islamic universities and Islamic faculties in various parts of the world including, Makkah, Islamabad, Kazakhstan and Libya. He has been Advisor to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (at whose request he prepared Civil Codes framework for Kazakhstan in the early 90s and most recently prepared the Islamic banking law for the country), various Presidents of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, President of the Islamic Conference of the Muslim World and General Secretary of the Muslim World League, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Hussain is also the President of the US Muslim Jurists Association. Dr. Hussain is Chairman, Sharia Supervision Board, of several Islamic financial Institutions including Dubai Islamic Bank, Emirates Islamic Bank, Sharjah Islamic Bank, Amlak, Tamweel, National Bonds, Liquidity Management Centre, AMAN Takaful Company, and others besides being core member of the Sharia Board of Islamic Development Bank. He has converted conventional banks into Islamic ones and was iinstrumental in the creation of the DFM as the world's first Islamic stock exchange. Dr. Hussain has given many landmark innovative products to the Islamic finance industry, including the World's First: Convertible Sukuk, Multiclass Sukuk, Currency and Rate Swaps, Personal Finance, and others.

Issam Al-Tawari is currently the Vice Chairman and CEO of Rasameel Structured Finance company, a securitization focused investment company supervised by the Central Bank of Kuwait. He started his career with Arab Banking Corporation (ABC) , Bahrain, working in the area of loans and syndication covering the European market, then covered the GCC market at a later stage. He then worked extensively on corporate finance issues with ABC Islamic Bank, before making the transition to Associate Director responsible for syndication and marketing. Issam joined The International Investor (“TII”), Kuwait, in 1998 in the structured finance area working on project finance, asset backed leases and a broad range of Islamic investment products. His last position with TII was as COO and Partner within the structured finance group. Issam serves on the board of directors for a number of companies and funds. He is also the chairman of Ain Takaful Insurance company, Kuwait, co-founder of Ritaj Investment Company, Kuwait, and ex-chairman of Binaá & Namaá (Sorooh) Investment company which specializes in financing B.O.T. projects. Issam is both a Harvard University and Henley Management Collage Aluminus and holds an MBA from University of Hull, UK, and a B.A. in Economics and Business Administration from Kuwait University in 1987.

Mr. Rashed is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of CORECAP, a leading alternative investment firm with operations in Dubai and Qatar focusing on the Middle Eastern Region. CORECAP MERCHANT BANK, the firm’s financial arm, is the first specialized private equity firm to be regulated by the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority. CORECAP’s pioneering track record includes advising on the US$ 100M CERT, the first government venture capital fund in Abu Dhabi, structuring the US$ 150M world’s first Sharia’a compliant mezzanine fund and deploying one of the Region’s first event-driven hedge funds. In 2008, the firm was recognized as a New Champion by the World Economic Forum and selected as a member of the community of Global Growth Companies for its unprecedented growth, innovation and leadership. Prior to founding CORECAP, Mr. Rashed was Board Member and CEO of Amwal, Qatar, where he built the firm’s investment banking and asset management capabilities. During his tenure, the firm led the investment banking industry in Qatar and executed several landmark transactions including underwriting the US$ 337M Ithmaar Bank IPO, the first non-Qatari IPO in Qatar and managing the QAR 1bn first mutual fund in Qatar and Amwal’s proprietary investment portfolio which outperformed the market by over 60%. In the record time of one year, the firm increased its profitability ten fold and was awarded the “Leading Investment Firm in Qatar”. Mr. Rashed was also serving as Vice President of Abraaj Capital, which capitalized on the value created and sold its major stake in Amwal for 6.8x its acquisition cost thus realizing an IRR of 101% in 3.5 years holding period, the highest IRR ever achieved on a private equity exit in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) financial sector. Prior to that, Mr. Rashed was part of Dubai Islamic Bank’s senior management team, primarily responsible for managing the bank’s US$ 150M proprietary private equity book covering investments from growth capital to late-stage buyouts and turnarounds diversified over various industries in the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Cyprus and Turkey. During his tenure with the bank, he participated in numerous acquisitions, consolidations and profitable trade sale and IPO exits including the acquisition of a strategic stake in Tameer-Bahrain, the first real estate company to go public on the Bahraini stock exchange. He has also represented the bank on the boards and executive committees of many portfolio companies. Mr. Rashed is a member of the Young Arab Leaders Organization in Dubai, he is also a member of the Gulf Venture Capital Association and the Egyptian Capital Market Association. He holds a Master’s degree with Honors in International Business Administration from ESLSCA University in France and a Bachelor’s degree of Commerce from Helwan University in Egypt.

Khalid Howladar is the Senior Credit Officer in the Structured Finance Group covering Middle Eastern Securitisation and Sukuk Finance and also helps drive Moody’s Islamic finance initiatives globally. Newly relocated to Dubai, he joined Moody’s in 2001 and previously was an analyst responsible for rating cash, synthetic, structured and project finance CDOs, as well as a member of the Business Development team responsible for new markets and products in the MENA region. In addition to providing various educational workshops for local market participants, he has lectured at the University of Dubai and authored articles for numerous finance journals across the globe which focus on the credit risk, securitisation and ratings of Sukuk structures. Previously Khalid spent four years at Credit Suisse, in the emerging market fixed income group as an senior analyst in the Risk Management team. Khalid holds an MSc in Finance from London Business School, an MSc in Information Technology and a BEng in Software Engineering both from the Imperial College of Science and Technology and Medicine.

Dr. Mohamad Nedal Alchaar is the Secretary General of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) which is an international organisation consisting of over 180 members from over 35 countries. Dr. Alchaar has a vast working experience in financial markets and institutions in addition to his central banking experience in developing countries. He was Director of Market Performance Analysis at Fannie Mae, and previously Vice President at Johnson & Higgins in Washington D.C. Dr. Alchaar also taught for several years at The George Washington University, where he received his Ph.D. Degree in Monetary Economics. He has also published several well-recognized books in the field of banking and financial markets, such as “Financial Markets”, “Economic Inquiries” and “Fundamentals of Banking Operations”, in addition to other scientific articles in the field of monetary policy and exchange rates analysis.

Muhammad Imran Usmani, Son of Justice (Retd) Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani, holds LLB, M. Holds a Ph. D. in Economics, from the University of Chicago, and is Director of Macroeconomics and Statistics, at the Dubai International Financial Center. Previously he held the position of Head of Economic Research, at the Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting in Doha, the GCC regional institution focusing on economic diversification of member states. He has been Executive Director at Goldman Sachs International, from 2001 to 2003, Senior Economist and Adviser in the Research Directorate of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 1998 to 2001 and has held positions as an economist in various departments of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1992 to 1998. He has also worked as a consultant for major corporate clients, financial institutions, hedge funds and the European Union. He has taught in academic institutions in particular at the University of Chicago where he has been an assistant in Corporate Finance to the Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Merton Miller. His views and research pieces are often quoted on international media such as The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, The BBC, CNN, Reuters, Dow Jones News, Market Watch, Bloomberg, The New York Times as well as local media.

Dr. Scacciavillani has published articles on macroeconomics and exchange rates in refereed international academic journals and has written numerous papers while at the IMF and the European Central Bank some of which re-printed in academic books. He has written reports issued by the IMF on member countries; research articles put out in the ECB Monthly Bulletin and issued numerous market analyses in the monthly, weekly and daily periodicals of Goldman Sachs. Nik Norishky Thani is the Executive Director of Islamic Finance at Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). He was a Fulbright scholar at Georgetown University, Washington D.C., where he focused on Islamic law and finance for his Master of Law. Nik graduated top of his class with Distinction and Dean's List. He was a Fellow at the Center for International Environmental Law, a Geneva-based international body that promotes sustainable economic development. Nik underwent the Program of Instruction for Lawyers at Harvard Law School in Boston, Massachusetts. He has extensive experience in advising and structuring Islamic financial instruments for over ten years, in particular Islamic sukuk. Prior to the DIFC, he was the Head of Islamic Capital Markets for MIMB Investment Bank Malaysia and Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad. Prior to his recent appointment as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) by the Turkish Government, Mr. Erkan was the Chief Advisor to the Board of Konya Sugar Company, the largest private sector group of companies in sugar refining and agricultural products. Mr. Erkan served as the General Manager of Ticaret Securities for a short period following his departure from the ISE as Executive Vice Chairman in 2006. During his employment at the ISE between 1994 and 2006, he established the International Relations, Research and International Market departments at the ISE as well as the Federation of Euro-Asian Stock Exchanges (FEAS) which currently has 31 stock exchanges as members. Mr. Erkan had additional responsibilities during his term at the ISE as a member of the Executive Board of Turkish-Japanese Business Counsel; Co-Director of projects with the OECD in SME financing and best practices for devoloping stock exchanges; representative of ISE at FEAS and other organisations such as the International Organisation of Securities Commissioners (IOSCO), the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), as well as being the Joint Project Coordinator of South East European Cooperative Initiative (SECI) to implement a cooperation Project for the securities markets in the Balkans. He also initiated a project for the cooperation of securities markets of the islamic countries in COMSEC Subcommittee under the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC). Mr. Erkan graduated from New York University Stern Business School with a B.S degree in Economics (1981) and an MBA in the fields of International Business and Finance (1984) with a thesis project on currency risk management at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)

Gatehouse received its licence to operate as a Shariah-compliant investment bank based in the City of London from the Financial Services Authority in April 2008. Gatehouse is a subsidiary of The Securities House, one of the leading investment companies in Kuwait.

Prior to joining Gatehouse, David led the Islamic finance team at WestLB and most recently closed the £225m Shariah-compliant UK leveraged buy-out of Aston Martin from Ford, as well as the benchmark US$1.1bn syndicated financing for Arcapita Bank (Bahrain) and the US$600m Sukuk al Ijara issue for Dar Al Arkan Real Estate Development Company (Saudi Arabia). Prior to joining WestLB David was a solicitor in London and Tokyo with Slaughter and May and Ashurst Morris Crisp. David holds an MA in Modern History from Oxford University

Stuart Pearce has had a long career in international banking and financial services. A British national, Stuart Pearce has held senior positions in treasury and commercial banking in the Middle East, North America, Asia and Europe. Stuart Pearce joined HSBC in 1974. As an international executive for the Group he held a range of positions in the Middle East, and Asia and the USA, including in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE, and Hong Kong. In 1992 he was appointed CEO of HSBC Private Banking Europe and Middle East, directly overseeing HSBC’s Private Banking operations in Switzerland and London. In 1997 Stuart Pearce was appointed Chief Executive and Country Manager at HSBC Japan, increasing HSBC’s brand awareness particularly amongst Japanese corporate, institutional and governmental clients. During his tenure he led the design and implementation of HSBC’s first integrated 5 year strategic plan for Japan. He was also Chairman of the International Bankers Association in Japan, and a member of the board of HSBC Securities and the British Chamber of Commerce. In 2001 Stuart Pearce was appointed HSBC’s Head of Corporate Banking in the UK. In this role he participated in the development of a strategic plan to bring together HSBC’s corporate, investment banking and markets businesses (CIBM), which resulted in the formation of HSBC CIBM division, and a substantial upgrading of the business as a whole. In 2002 Stuart Pearce took up the new appointment of CEO of HSBC Investment Management, in which he designed and implemented a strategy to create an integrated investment management business. In May 2005 Stuart Pearce retired from HSBC, and was appointed Chief Executive and Director General of the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) Authority in July 2005. Stuart Pearce is an Executive Director on the board of the QFC Authority. The QFC is designed to attract international financial services institutions and major multi-national corporations to share in a long-term and mutually beneficial partnership with Qatar.

Safdar has previously been instrumental in developing the Islamic finance businesses at UBS and Calyon. Safdar is a British citizen, has a BSc in Mathematics and is a qualified Chartered Accountant, and is based in Bahrain.
